Residential Trash, Garbage & Recycling Pickup FAQs

Get answers to frequently asked questions about residential trash pickup.

When do I put out my carts for weekly trash and recycling collection?

Wheel your carts to the street and place them curbside by 6 a.m. on your collection day. Do not overload carts; the lids must close completely. Overage fees may apply to overfilled carts. Make sure that all trash and debris is in the cart. Garbage or waste left beside carts may not be collected.
When does the garbage truck come for pick-up in my area?

Unless your community has a preferred collection time the day and time of trash collection in your area will depend on several factors. Collection can be made anytime between 6:00 AM and 10:00 PM each day. Your trash is not considered ‘missed’ until it is after 10:00 PM.
What items can I put out for trash collection?
While acceptable materials may vary by location, the list of items below is usually allowed in the everyday trash you dispose of in your curbside toter, bin, can, or container.

Diapers

Disposable razors

Cactus and palm branches

Cat litter and pet feces

Glassware and ceramic dishes/cups

Hoses and wire

Juice boxes/pouches

Non-fluorescent light bulbs

Sheet glass (windows, mirrors, etc.)

Foam cups or packing materials

Treated wood (painted, stained, etc.)
What items and materials are considered recyclable?
Check out Fairfax County’s list of recyclable/non-recyclable materials plus tips and information on recycling in your home. For quick reference, the following common items should be recycled, provided they’re clean and dry.

Plastic bottles and cans

What items do NOT go into the trash?
The following hazardous household waste items should NOT be treated as everyday garbage and should NOT be disposed of curbside, in your totes, bins or carts:

Batteries

Electronics

Fluorescent light bulbs

Paint and paint cans

Prescription medications

Fats, Grease, Motor, or Cooking oils and filters of any kind
How do I dispose of bulk items?

The collection of ‘Bulk’ items is made through our 3rd party hauling service HaulShare. No need to wait a week to have your items removed, with HaulShare you can receive same-day service if you place an order before 12:00 PM. Terms fees and conditions may apply.

Items considered bulk include:

Appliances, TVs and electronics
Household furniture
Scrap metal
Tires — up to 4 car or light-truck tires separated from rims
Yard trimmings — bundled for composting
What is the correct way to dispose of Yard Waste?

Yard waste collection for single-family and townhouse residential units, including brush will be collected between March 27th through December 18th annually.

Subscribers are permitted to recycle up to 5 individual bags, containers, or bundles for weekly removal. Brush may be limited to individual pieces or bundles no greater than 50 pounds in weight, 4 feet in length, and no pieces larger than 3 inches in diameter.
How do I get new equipment from Champion?
What is your inclement weather policy?

Roadway safety and the health of our team is our primary concern. Roads and/or areas, which are deemed unsafe due to snow or ice, will be suspended for collection. If we are unable to provide collection, services will resume on your next regularly scheduled collection day.
